algorithm description This website comprises the delivery of carbon monoxide (CO) vertical column densities derived from 2310-2338 nm SCIAMACHY reflectance measurements for the full mission period January 2003-April 2012. The retrieval employs the SICOR algorithm developed by the Netherlands Institute for Space Research (SRON) and provides the CO columm, its noise estimate and total column averaging kernels for individual measurements.
validation summary SCIAMACHY CO retrievals under clear sky conditions were validated against measurements of ground-based Fourier transform infrared spectrometers at 27 stations of the NDACC-IRWG and TCCON network and MOZAIC/IAGOS aircraft measurements at 26 airports worldwide (please read: this publication). Cloudy-sky CO retrievals allow to estimated CO over the oceans in good agreement with four NDACC and TCCON measurements at coastal sites and can significantly improve validation results at low albedo sites over land (please read: this publication).
available data The data set is freely available to the public and accessible via: SRON DataProducts website. Data are provided as monthly zip-files containing retrievals for single orbits. Note that the precision of the individual SCIAMACHY carbon monoxide product is ~10-100% and thus spatial and/or temporal averaging needs (see e.g. de Laat et al. 2006, Geophys. Res. Lett., 33, 18 L07807).
