Validation summary for Absorbing Aerosol Index (AAI) by KNMI
(last update: 19 June 2018)

The SCIAMACHY Absorbing Aerosol Index (AAI) product has been compared to TOMS, GOME-1, and GOME-2 satellite data. The latest data version 5.1 (retrieved mainly from level-1 version 7.04 data) was found to agree within 0.5 index points. A trend due to instrument degradation that was previously present has been removed to within the 0.1 index point level using a new in-flight degradation correction method. Sun glint situations lead to anomalously high values of the AAI. This is a well-known property of the AAI. A sun glint flag is therefore present inside the product. A solar eclipse flag is also included. The SCIAMACHY AAI product is described extensively in Tilstra et al., 2012 [PDF].
