Validation summary for Absorbing Aerosol Index (AAI) by KNMI
(last update: 9 May 2012)

The SCIAMACHY Absorbing Aerosol Index product has been compared to TOMS, GOME-1, and GOME-2 satellite data. The latest data version 5.0 (retrieved from level-1 v6.0x/7.0x data) was found to agree within 0.5 index points. A trend due to instrument degradation that was previously present has been removed to within the 0.1 index point level using a new in-flight degradation correction method. Sunglint situations lead to anomalously high values of the AAI. This is a well-known property of the AAI. A sunglint flag is therefore present inside the product.
