Validation summary for CH4 vertical column by SRON/JPL (last update: 23 June 2010)

IMAPv1.1 has been validated by Dils et al. (2005). Frankenberg et al. (2006) show systematic differences over Australia between IMAPv1.1 on one hand and model results, FTIR data, and NOAA-CMDL on the other hand. Frankenberg et al. (2008a) show that this is due to errors in the CH4 spectroscopy. Frankenberg et al. (2008b) show that errors in the Hitran H2O spectroscopy lead to an overestimate of tropical emissions in IMAPv1.1. The updated H2O and CH4 spectroscopy are included in IMAPv5.0. Inversions including IMAPv5.0 data instead of IMAPv1.1 are more consistent with ground-based-station-only inversions (Frankenberg et al. 2008; Bergamaschi et al. 2009).
