SCIAVALIG, in cooperation with ESA and DLR, has defined a validation reference set of SCIAMACHY states.

purpose

The purpose of this set is a quick validation of new processor versions. This set will be processed directly after an upgrade of the processor is in place, and before reprocessing of the whole mission. This holds for both level 1 and level 2, so that also the scientific level 2 products can benefit from a quick validation after a level 1 processing change.

criteria

The reference set should have a good latitudinal and seasonal coverage, and also cover a wide range of possible values. Of course, it should also have good colocated validation measurements. The reference set is limited to a few thousand states in total, so there has been some prioritising. Criteria were a.o.:

• more measurements or products covered by the same state
• good latitudinal and seasonal coverage
• early after decontamination (for CH4, CO, CO2, N2O)
• sparse measurements (for e.g. BrO profile)
• distance to the validation measurements
